In association with Lou and Chris Horsfall, gracious and welcoming hosts of Lake Shore Lodge on Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania, we are both proud and excited to offer their 8 day Lake Safari and Chimp Trekking Package.
The best months to do this itinerary are mid May to mid October which is the dry season in Mahale. The only month that we will not run the itinerary is February as this is when Lake Shore is closed. We can do the trip for a minimum of 2 x pax and a maximum of 8 x pax. Below are the details of the itinerary:
Day 1 – Fly on Auric Air from Dar es Salaam to Sumbawanga on a Wednesday, Friday or Sunday. The special thus runs from Wednesday to Wednesday, Friday to Friday or Sunday to Sunday. The flight departs from Dar at 07h00and arrives in Sumbawanga at 11h05. We collect the guests from Sumbawanga and drive them to Lake Shore. This is a 3 hour drive and is really lovely as it goes through the Lwafe Game and Forest Reserve, down the escarpment to Lake Tanganyika. We arrive mid afternoon and guests spend a night in one of our Beach Chalets.
Day 2 – We set off early (around 06h30) in our local dhow, the Lake Wanderer. We stop enroute to have a packed breakfast and a picnic lunch and to snorkel. That night we set up a fly camp in one of the pristine bays along the Lake and have dinner around the fire at the water’s edge. There will be a boat driver and a chef on board.
Day 3 – We continue up Lake Tanganyika to Mahale and go to pay our park fees and then set up a fly camp on the beach in Mahale.
Day 4 – We start with an early morning chimp trek and return to camp after seeing the chimps. We spend a second night camped in Mahale on the beach.
Day 5 – We have a second opportunity to see the chimps and do another morning chimp trek. We then return to the boat and start to head back to Lake Shore and camp near Sibwesa, just outside Mahale.
Day 6 – We continue southwards down Lake Tanganyika, snorkeling and enjoying the beautiful shoreline and the clear waters. We fly camp in another beautiful bay.
Day 7 – Today we set off for Lake Shore and arrive in the afternoon. Overnight in one of our Beach Chalets.
Day 8 – We depart at 07h00 to drive back to Sumbawanga so that guests can catch the return flight back to Dar es Salaam. The flight leaves Sumbawanga at 11h20 and arrives in Dar at 15h30.
